Tikehau

The Pink Sand Island

Tikehau encapsulates the meaning of going off the grid. This small, cherished atoll consists of countless tiny white and pink sand islets engulfed in coconut groves and hidden alcoves. In Tikehau, which actually means "peaceful landing," you will find nothing but absolute serenity on her calm and graceful shores.

The Locale

Tikehau is a small, circular atoll neighboring Rangiroa in the Tuamotu Archipelago. The lagoon, formed by an almost unbroken ring of continuous coral, resembles an immense natural swimming pool. At only 16 miles (25 kilometers) across and no more than 100 feet (30 meters) deep, this underwater aquarium is teeming with marine life. According to the legendary marine researcher Jacques Cousteau, it has a higher concentration of fish than any other lagoon in French Polynesia.

The Allure

As you can imagine, diving and snorkeling are the two main attractions in Tikehau. The best diving is found on the western shore around the Tuheiava Pass, the only navigable entry into the lagoon. You will encounter reef sharks and the occasional manta ray, but the appeal here is the enormous population of colorful fish. Some of the more common species include tuna, snapper, barracuda, lionfish, clownfish and parrotfish.

Aside from a few pensions and guesthouses, there are two resort accommodations in this remote locale: The Le Tikehau Resort & Spa. Located at the southeast end, it offers a selection of beach and overwater bungalows. It also serves as a great hub for any and all leisurely activities including kayaking, snorkeling and biking. It even has its own dive center, making it easy to arrange your daily excursions. Alternatively, the seven bungalow Ninamu Resort is the ultimate paradise for the water sports enthusiast. On the eastern side of Tikehau, a large vacation home is available for rental. Recreation

The underwater population greatly exceeds the number of inhabitants on land. Thus, fishing is the primary source of food and income for the nearly 500 local residents in Tikehau. You can visit one of the family-owned fish farms where they trap different species of fish in a maze of underwater fencing. Much of their catch is then shipped to Papeete and sold at the local markets. 

The islanders are grouped in the main village of Tuherahera at the southern side, leaving the remainder of the atoll virtually untouched. In fact, the northeastern quarter is mostly uninhabited. There is a small dirt road that encircles the main islet around the village, perfect for a scenic bike ride. Naturally adorned with colorful flowers such as hibiscus and bougainvillea, Tuherahera is one of the most attractive villages in the Tuamotu Atolls.

Tikehau also has some of the best beaches and secluded islets in the region. On the eastern side of the atoll, there is a long, curving beach covered in pink sand. You can easily wade in the water and snorkel from one islet to the next. You can also take a boat into the middle of the lagoon and visit Motu Puarua at the northeastern end. This small islet, known as Bird Island, is a natural aviary for numerous colonies of nesting sea birds.

The hospitality at Conrad Bora Bora was top notch. I am a vegetarian and was initially concerned about my meal options. However, the chefs at all the restaurants went out of their way to prepare dishes basis my preferences. This made me really happy because they put their guests first. Overall-fantastic trip and service! We are back with our hearts full.

One of the best trips I had to Tahiti was with tahiti.com. I travel to Tahiti every single year. We took two nights in Papeete And four nights in Le Tikehau. Both hotels, were absolutely wonderful, especially that she upgraded us in Papeete. Out of her own, she added the transit stay on the last day with dinner at the hotel. Highly recommend Tahiti.com company for travel, Ask for Candice. You won’t find anything like this out there.

I travel a lot and only once before used a travel agent. We landed in Papeete at 5:30 AM on December 6th and Candice had booked the Pearl Resort the night prior so we would have a place to relax before our flight on Tahiti Air at 2 in the afternoon. At 9:30 I got an email from Tahiti Air that they changed our flight to December 20th. It turns out that there was a strike and Tahiti air could not fly to Tikehau. I called Candace immediately and within an hour she had us booked on Moana Air to Rangiroa. She booked a beautiful resort, Kia Ora, and by 2:30 PM we were on this beautiful island and staying in a beautiful resort. What could have been stressful and a total hassle turned into a smooth change of plans expertly handled! I highly recommend Candace and Tahiti.com!!

The might we arrived at Tahiti, on the way to hotel, we realized the next day's flight to Bora Bora was too early and didn't leave us time It was a great experience working with Tahiti.com agents for our Bora Bora trip. The might we arrived at Tahiti, on the way to hotel, we realized the next day's flight to Bora Bora was too early and didn't leave us time to explore this island. We emailed the agent that booked us the trip, but seems they are not working on weekends. Then we reached out to the emergency contact phone line. After some text exchanges, they said it's not possible to change the flight at night, but they'll try that when the system opens 8am the next day. And next day a bit after 8am, they texted to let me know the flight has been changed to the afternoon, that gave us a few hours to explore Tahiti island. We appreciated this flexibility a lot! We went there the week before Thanksgiving. Seems like it's off-season. We got pretty empty flights from SFO to PPT and back, where even though it's an 8-hour flight, everybody could actually pick a row to lie down and rest if they wanted to. :) Also some of the excursions we booked turned out almost like private tours, where we are the only couple on the boat. The weather turned out nice too. It only rained for a while on two of those days. Most other times it was cloudy or sunny, no rain to spoil the fun.
